The Lankans tried hard and showed huge courage proving that the Australian team is not unbeatable. By winning the first ODI at Adelaide they made a strong point but failed to do so in the remainder of the series.
In the third ODI they had a very good chance after they won the toss and selected to bat on a good track. But the opening batsmen didn't deliver, although Mahela Jayawardene, Russel Arnold and Kumara Sangakkara batted well to steer the Lankans to a score of 266 in 50 overs. Suprisingly Brett Lee the bowler who is expected to take the wickets ended up wicketless in all the three matches of VB Series. Nathan Bracken was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets and giving away just 44 runs. Their efforts went down the drain when Gilchrist started the innings for the Aussies getting off to a flyer.
Gilchrist scored a quick fire hundred reaching the milestone in just 67 balls which is the fastest in Australia. Gilchrist was earlier dropped by Sanath Jayasuria who failed to take a skier. Simon Katich gave him good support scoring steadily and just rotating the strike. Gilchrist then was bowled by Murlitharan on 122 but the damage was done and the result was on the cards. Ricky ponting joined Katich and they finished off the target with almost 5 overs to spare.
