End of Supersub! PDF Print E-mail

The ICC declared today that the Super-sub rule may be discontinued as it was giving an advantage for the team winning the toss. "We have recommended to the board that the on-trial super-sub rule may be discontinued from March 21, 2006, since it has proved to be unpopular with the teams and hasn't achieved the objective," Said Malcolm Speed, ICC chief executive.

"We introduced this rule on a 12-month trial basis last year to make one-day cricket more exciting. But from the feedback that we have received from captains and former players it was apparent that we should not continue with it."

The rule was brought in by the ICC to make the game more interesting and the allrounders could be brought into play more. But this evidently has other repercussions. One wonders if the undue advantage is the only reason for this, because it could have easily been overcome by letting the team announce the supersub after the toss.

Wel will just have to wait and watch.
